Christ Church C of E Primary School on Shooters Hill was one of the 14% of UK primary schools who did not have a dedicated library - until now!
By working with members of the community, the school team and ABC, they have finally opened their brand new library and celebrated with an author visit.
Although they have always had a love of books, Christ Church, as a one-form entry primary, has never been able to afford a library.
With a lot of love and dedication, over the past few months the staff led by Headteacher Anne-Marie Bahlol, a team of parents and carers and a merry band of keen children have worked tirelessly to collect scan, stamp and sticker over 2,300 books.
ABC provided some design support by re-jigging the layout to provide a more cohesive space that the children and the school we able to use more successfully.
MD of LoveReading4Kids (school governor and parent) Deborah Maclaren commented: “We wanted every child at Christ Church to experience the joy of a school library. It’s incredulous that it isn’t a statutory requirement, we naturally assume that all schools have them but that is far from the case. I’m delighted that we have been able to support this brilliant initiative for Christ Church pupils now and for many years to come. Everything changes when we read, and it’s critical that we give our children access to a wide range of new, diverse and inclusive books where they can all find themselves reflected. We want to help them to find the book that makes them into a reader for life.”
