Pickhurst Infant Academy wanted to celebrate the school's 70th anniversary in style and leave pupils with a lasting legacy. The school didn't have a whole school library, but what they did have was a fantastic set of parent volunteers, motivated staff and ABC Book Club to help them.
This project was over 6 months in the planning, and while the school held fundraisers to support the project, ABC got cracking planning the space and engaging the skilled trades that would help to design and build the woodland themed library.
Dave Blacker at Olivbells was once again commissioned to create a showstopping central tree that could also be used for seating and book displays, and ABC's graphic designer Adam Jones produced some stunning wall art that enveloped the room. The parent and teacher volunteer team painted the walls and laid the grassy carpet and the West Wickham branch of Langford Russell estate agents collected pre-loved books from local families to fill the shelves in the library.
The library was opened by the deputy Mayor of Bromley to an excited group of invited guests which included a selection of pupils, all of whom were delighted to see their new library.
While the adults loved the new look room and were amazed by the transformation, the children headed straight for the bookcases and settled down to read. Which is what it's all about really!
We hope this library will continue to delight pupils and staff alike for many years to come.
